Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition - korak naprijed

Procesor je kao što smo u uvodu spomenuli napravljen na Westmere arhitekturi u 32 nm proizvodnom procesu a uz korištenje poznatih High-K i Metal Gate Transistors tehnologija. Površina ove masivne jezgre je 248 mm2 a ukupan broj tranzistora penje se na brojku od 1.17 milijardi čime i7-980X postaje najkompleksniji desktop CPU do sada. Ako se prisjetimo, Bloomfieldi su imali "samo" 731 milijun tranzistora, što je za čak 60% manje ali i za oko 6% veću površinu jezgre (263mm2). Lynnfieldi su s druge strane kao do sada najkompleksniji imali površinu jezgre od 296mm2 te 771 milijun tranzistora. Kao što vidimo na slici, glavne značakje Westmere arhitekture su jasno vidljive, a novost je naravno šest jezgri. Brzina procesora je baš kao i kod i7-975X modela 3.33GHz, a s obzirom da je riječ o Extreme Editionu i množitelj je otključan. Cache arhitektura je također ista, što znači da prvostupanjske L1 memorije ima ukupno 64KB po jezgri (32KB podatkovne (8-way) i 32KB instrukcijske (4-way)) te drugostupanjske 256KB po jezgri (8-way). Trećestupanjske L3 memorije, koju jezgre dijele međusobno je sada ukupno 12MB (i dalje je to 2MB po jezgri). No, ovaj put je L3 doživjela i promjene u latenciji koja je tako skočila sa 42 na 48 ciklusa što je za malo preko 14% sporije. Sa slike vidimo kako je podijeljena na dva dijela, te kako zauzima popriličnu površinu na jezgri.

Procesor podržava i dobro nam znani Hyper-Threading pa je u stanju paralelno odraditi 12 threadova ili po naški dretvi. Uz HT tu je u poznata Turbo Boost tehnologija koja na ovome procesoru takt svih šest jezgri može podići za dodatnih 133MHz, a jedne za 266MHz. Ako to pribrojimo osnovnom taktu jasno je kako procesor sa svim jezgrama može raditi na 3.46GHz ili sa jednom na 3.6GHz (naravno dok je unutar TDP-a). Kada smo već kod TDP-a spomenimo kako on nije veći od onoga i7-975X procesora te iznosi 130W. Potrošnja bez opterećenja po papirima ne prelazi 12W, naravno uz uključene sve power save opcije. Zadržavanje unutra istog TDP-a je direktna posljedica smanjenja proizvodnog procesa. To, i činjenica da je zadržana konfiguracija sa 1366 pinova omogućuje korištenje ovih procesora sa X58 Express pločama (uz nadogradnju BIOS-a).

Radni napon procesora varira između 0.95 i 1.3V. I dalje je tu dobro poznati integrirani memorijski kontroler koji podržava do tri kanala DDR3 memorije brzine 1066MHz. Nije se dakle otišlo korak naprijed na 1333MHz kao na Lynnfieldima. Zadržana je i QPI arhitektura pa Gulftown za komunikaciju koristi dva jednosmjerna QPI linka (za slanje i primanje) koji rade na brzini od 6.4GB/s. Ostale značajke arhitekture su i podrška za SSE4.1 te SSE4.2 instrukcije kao i podrška za dvanaest novih AES-NI instrukcija napravljenih za konsolidaciju AES matematičkih operacija.

Uz retail pakiranje procesora dolazi i novodizajnirani DBX-B hladnjak koji je po Intelovim riječima ne samo sposoban hladiti Gulftowna na tvorničkim, već i na overclockiranim taktovima. Kao i većina današnjih, modernih hladnjaka sastavljen je od aluminijskih listova, bakrenih termovodljivih cijevi i bakrene baze. Sve to hladi ventilator koji ima promjenjivu brzinu vrtnje od 800 pa do 1800 okretaja u minuti. Ako je suditi po dosadašnjim rješenjima iz Intela, ovaj hladnjak neće biti nešto posebno, no naravno to nećemo saznati dok ga ne testiramo.
